  • Greetings!

I hope your New Year is going well and you are still keeping up with your resolutions. Polls conducted about New Year's resolutions show that health related changes are people's number one priority. It's easy to do if we make small daily goals and then make these changes part of our routine. It takes about 3 to 4 weeks to incorporate a new behavior so you should be well on your way! This month I have some great information about herbal remedies for the flu, green tea, and a great Carob Chip cookie recipe.

There's No Shortage of Natural Flu Remedies

Recent headlines have us all worried about the flu and the vaccine shortage which they tell us is a "crisis," but for those who use natural remedies and herbs, there never has been, and never will be, a shortage of effective flu remedies. In fact there are hundreds of thousands of Americans who use natural remedies who never get flu shots. There are so many ways to thwart the flu, colds, and other bacterial and viral infections. Read on to find out what things you can do to defend yourself from the flu and other infections.

ALJ - Helps break up respiratory congestion.
Anamu - Helps fight viral infections.
APS II with White Willow - Contains herbs that help reduce inflammation and eae minor aches and pains in a similar manner to aspirin.
Colloidal Silver - Natural antiseptic and antibiotic. Helps prevent secondary bacterial infections.
Defense Maintenance - Supports the immune system.
Elderberry Defense - Enhances the body's ability to fight acute viral infections such as colds and flu.

FV- Traditional herbal formula to settle digestive upset.
Ginger - Settles the stomach and eases nausea and vomiting.
HCP-X - Another great cold and flu formula that features ginger as a major ingredient.
High Potency Garlic - Fights viral and bacterial infections, particularly in the lungs.
IF-C - Reduces heat and clears toxins from the body. Helpful for fevers and fever with chills.
Immune Stimulator - Stimulates the immune system to fight infection. Helps boost the immune system to keep from getting sick.
Influenza Homeopathic - Homeopathic remedy for relief of flu symptoms.
IN-X - Helps fight infection in the lymph glands.
Olive Leaf - Is an anti-viral.
Seasonal Defense - Supports the immune system.
Ultimate Echinacea - Boosts immunity to prevent or fight illness.
Yarrow - Helpful for viral conditions and reducing fevers.

Another way to prevent the spread of colds and flu is to diffuse essential oils into the home. These oils disinfect the air. They can also be made into a spritzer by mixing them with a little distilled water in a spray bottle and misting the air in front of one's face when traveling on a plane or visiting public places. Essential oils that have been helpful for this purpose include Guardian, Breathe Free, lemon, and pine.

    Quick Tips:

    1. Wash your hands frequently for at least 15 seconds.
    2. Avoid sugary foods including hidden sugar foods such as processed foods and condiments.
    3. Improve digestion with enzymes, like Proactazyme Plus or Food Enzymes, to ensure food (especially protein) is being broken down properly. Poorly digested proteins (or other nutrients) clog the lymphatic system and weaken mucus membranes which makes you susceptible to infections.
    4. Fiber is also important, because fiber absorbs irritating substances, reduces intestinal inflammation and bulks the stool to improve elimination. So, ensuring adequate fiber intake is a second step to maintaining a healthy immune system. Nature's Three or Psyllium Hulls Combination are good choices for a daily fiber supplement.
    5. Drink half your body weight in ounces of filtered water per day. For example if you weigh 150 lbs drink at least 75 oz. of water a day.
    6. Get plenty of rest and relaxation.

     What People Are Saying:

I used to get the flu a lot as a nurse I get constant exposure especially in the fall and winter. I found NSP in 2001 and as I learned how to care for my health with natural supplements my health improved immensly. I take Elderberry Defense faithfully as soon as I feel like I am coming down with the flu. I usually take it every 3 hours. By the next day I usually don't have symptoms, but I continue to take it just as a protection for about 3-7 days. It works for me! ~Claire

A friend of mine swears by Olive Leaf Extract. She works in an office and any time anyone is sick around her she doses up with Olive Leaf Extract and doesn't get sick. I also know a lady who worked in the pharmacy at WalMart and everyone was shocked that when the flu was rampant she didn't get it because she took Defense Maintenance. My daughter is in nursing training and when she works at the hospital and comes home feeling a little "off" whether sore throat or whatever she takes extra Thai Go, chlorophyll and Ultimate Echinacea and she is fine. ~ Laurie K.

I think a lot of people forget about Dr. Christopher's Herbal Composition Powder
(HCP-X). I like to use it when you start with the chills like when coming down with a cold or flu. Warms you right up, boosts your immune system and helps zap the cold in it's tracks! ~ Jan W.

    FEATURED HERBAL FORMULA

    Green Tea Extract Camellia sinensis

Green tea is made from the same plant as black tea except that black tea is processed by fermentation which damages important therapeutic phytochemicals. Green tea contains bioflavanoid polyphenol catechins; including EGCG. These are very potent antioxidants with immune and circulatory system benefits. Research has shown that they inactivate some viruses, reduce the risk of several fatal diseases including cancer, decrease the risk of blood clots, prevent strokes and lower blood cholesterol levels, etc. They may also help regulate blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

Nature's Sunshine Products (NSP) Green Tea is decaffeinated and concentrated using a water/heat process. The remaining 2-4 mg of caffeine per capsule is very small compared to 120mg in a cup of coffee. Three capsules are equivalent to drinking 10 cups of green tea. 5-10 cups per day is considered therapuetic.

GREEN TEA'S CANCER-FIGHTING ALLURE BENEFITS SMOKERS TOO

Green tea's ability to fight cancer is even more potent and varied than scientists suspected, say researchers who have discovered that chemicals in green tea shut down one of the key molecules that tobacco relies upon to cause cancer. It's a find that could help explain why people who drink green tea are less likely to develop cancer. The finding by scientists at the University of Rochester's Environmental Health Science Center appears in the July 21 issue of Chemical Research in Toxicology, published by the American Chemical Society.
