10 Tips to Improve Your Health

1. Start adding nutritionally dense, whole foods to your diet. Add them in slowly and eat these foods first. Gradually, you will find your taste for refined foods will diminish. Fresh greens, whole grains, fresh fruits are all good choices.

2. Always eat breakfast. You have probably heard this before however this is a gentle reminder..."Breakfast is the most important meal of the day". Not only does it cut your risk of obesity significantly but it also helps decrease insulin resistance which can then lead to Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease.

Make sure your breakfast includes some quality protein and good quality fat. For example, eggs, lean natural meats, avocados, yogurt without added sugar and preferably organic (I like Nancy's Yogurt w/flax seed oil, protein powder and blueberries mixed in. Yum!), whole grain cereal with organic butter or flax seed oil (without sugar) would be some good choices, but it does depend on what you personally like and what feels good to you.

3. Eat small meals throughout the day on a regular schedule. This will keep your blood sugar more balanced rather than eating a couple of huge meals. Check out the Zone Diet for taking this step a bit further. Also take some healthy snacks with you so you're not at the mercy of a vending machine. Try dried fruits, fresh fruits, nuts, organic cheese.

4. Take some time to notice the flavor, the texture, aroma, and color of what you're eating. Take a moment to pause and chew your food and enjoy whatever you eat. Remember to breathe while you eat and even put down your fork or spoon between bites.

5. Enjoy your food! No matter what you are eating don't feel guilty about what you eat. Even if it's not the best food choic, eat it, be thankful for it, and enjoy it.

6. Get a good night's sleep.

7.Get moving with physical activity. Do something you like to do. Such as walking, swimming, ride your bike, play a game of tennis or golf, garden, go for a nature hike. Make it pleasurable activity to you  instead of dreadful activity.

8. One of the reasons many people overeat and/or eat foods that aren't healthy is because they are "unhappy" and trying to fill an emotional void with food. So everyday take the time to nourish yourself with pleasurable experiences such as time with a friend, a relaxing bath, a good book, a massage or any activity that gives you a sense of pleasure. This then will fill the emotional void instead of the food.

9. Drink plenty of water each day. A general rule is 1/2 your body weight in ounces per day. So if you weigh 150lbs then you would drink 75oz. of pure water every day.

10. Last but really so very important is to not "beat yourself up" emotionally about your weight, or anything else for that matter. Don't feel guilty and bad about yourself when you don't follow the plan that you set for yourself. That's not the point because to begin to change you will need to have acceptance for yourself and your body. The goal is for you to begin to get addicted, if you will, to have your body feel good. Then, you will no long struggle with what is good for you, it will become easy and almost automatic!

Product of the Month - Nature's Hoodia Formula

About Hoodia

Hoodia gordonii is a native cacti of the semi-deserts of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Angola. There are about 20 species in this cacti family with the gordonii being the one that contains a natural appetite suppressant. Other products may contain the name 'hoodia' but may not necessarily provide the results you are looking for unless it is the gordonii species.
The effects of this plant were first observed by a Dutch anthropologist in 1937 while he was studying the San Bushman of the Kalahari Desert. He noted they chewed on the stem of a specific variety of Hoodia to act as an appetite suppressant and thirst quencher before and during nomadic hunts into sparsely vegetated areas.

The San, one of the world's oldest and most primitive tribes, call this plant Xhoba and have known it's properties for thousands of years.  Besides alleviating hunger and thirst, Hoodia provides a state of mental alertness without the jittery feelings produced by the Western diet of caffeine.

Hoodia sat on a shelf in a lab for almost thirty years when South African scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) began studying it.  Because Bushmen were known to eat Hoodia, it was included in a study of indigenous foods. Animals fed the flesh of the cactus lost weight, but otherwise suffered no ill effects.

How Does Hoodia Work?
The hypothalamus is the organ affected by the compound because it's the location of the nerve cells that sense glucose sugar.  When you eat, blood sugar goes up because of the body converting it to glucouse and these nerve cells start firing which gives you a full feeling of having had enough to eat.

The first human clinical trial, conducted by Phytopharm, was with a morbidly obese group of volunteers placed in a controlled environment, where the subjects could only read, watch television, sleep and eat.  Half were given Hoodia and the other half, a placebo.  Fifteen days later the Hoodia group had reduced their caloric intake by 1000 a day and suffered no ill effects.

Keep in mind that as with any natural or chemical substance dealing with appetite, people can misuse the product.  Hoodia provides an avenue of hope for those challenged with an overactive appetite resulting in unhealthy weight gain, but should not be used by those with eating disorders to lessen appetite when overweight is not an issue.

Hoodia will not correct food choices.  Cutting appetite doesn't mean people will select nutritious food for the calories they do consume.  For some this means adding a multi-vitamin supplement and antioxidants to their weight loss approach, but the best lifestyle choice is to change dietary habits and eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains since a healthier diet will normally provide more satiety than one full of junk foods., so including healthy lifestyle changes of nutrtional food choices is wise.
